Project
mTORUS
mTORUS (microbiome-based Therapeutic Options for Recurrent Urinary Symptoms) is an interdisciplinary research initiative exploring new ways to manage urinary tract infections and related bladder conditions. As part of the LOOP Zurich program, and building on findings from the ImmunoPhage project by Hochschulmedizin Zürich (HMZ), mTORUS investigates innovative microbiome-based therapeutic concepts.
The project focuses on a combined “push-pull” approach: using engineered bacteriophages to selectively reduce harmful bacteria (push out) while introducing carefully selected human-derived urinary microbiota to help restore a healthy bladder ecosystem (pull in). By integrating patient data, laboratory research, and advanced computational methods, the mTORUS team aims to develop and evaluate sustainable therapeutic strategies that could provide alternatives to conventional antibiotic treatments.
